WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — In only his third Wimbledon tournament, Carlos Alcaraz is already one of the main men to beat. The top-seeded Spaniard hasn’t been past the fourth round at the All England Club, but he has become the primary threat in Novak Djokovic’s quest for a record-equaling eighth men’s title at the grass-court Grand Slam.On Tuesday, Alcaraz beat Jeremy Chardy 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 on No. 1 Court — a fitting location for the No. 1 player in the world. The match was played under the roof because rain affected play on the outside courts for the second straight day.“Obviously without the roof, with sun, is much better for me. I think for everyone as well,” Alcaraz said on court. “With the roof or not, I have to show my best level.”His best led Alcaraz to his first major title at the U.S. Open last year. He reached the semifinals at this year’s French Open, but Djokovic ended up winning that match en route to his 23rd Grand Slam title. At Wimbledon, Alcaraz reached the second r...

NEW YORK (AP) — Defending champion Miki Sudo forced down 39 1/2 hot dogs and buns to claim a ninth women's title in Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest, before stormy weather moved in and delayed the men's competition.Sudo beat Mayoi Ebihara’s 33 1/2 hot dogs in 10 minutes Tuesday in a contest that appeared to be much closer until the final count was announced. The unofficial real-time counter showed the two women tied throughout much of the competition. She said competition from the 27-year-old Ebihara had thrown her off. Substance found at White House tests positive for cocaine “The first couple minutes, I found myself watching her, which I never want to do. If you’ve been wondering why Joe Ryan insists upon wearing long sleeves when he pitches on hot, humid days, here’s your answer.“I was getting picked,” he said.Inadvertently tipping his pitches. Very inadvertently.“The main thing is, for a lot of guys,” Twins rotation mate Pablo López explained, “When they switch pitches, you can see the muscles in the forearm flaring up — when you start searching for the right grip.”For time out of mind, manager Rocco Baldelli said, there have been players who pride themselves on using every detail to help them at the plate, and that includes watching a pitcher’s forearm for a clue to what pitch might be coming. Now, it’s more institutional.“As time has gone on,” Baldelli said, “some teams have put a lot of energy into studying the opposing pitcher to the point where you know every flinch, every tongue, every finger that’s poking in a different direction, where the eyes are looking.
