SAN FRANCISCO — A city resident who lost his brother, son, and wife in a series of tragic incidents has been sentenced to federal prison for 41 months, despite having been acquitted in January of possessing the bullet that killed his wife, court records show. The story of 44-year-old Omar Pope dates back to last year, when federal prosecutors charged him with two felony counts: being a felon in possession of a loaded gun in May 2022, and possessing the bullet that killed his wife in December 2021, as the couple struggled over a pistol inside their home.Pope made the unusual move of pleading guilty to the May possession charge and taking the second count to trial. Last January, a jury acquitted him of being a felon in possession of ammunition, but that left Pope still facing a federal prison term for the gun case.On Thursday, U.S. District Judge William Alsup sentenced Pope to 41 months in federal prison, with credit for time he spent in jail since his June 2022 arrest.According...

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah woman who wrote a children’s book about grief after her husband’s death and was later arrested for killing him had made changes to her husband’s life insurance years before when she is accused of fatally poisoning him, according to charging documents updated Thursday. The additional allegations, which were previously mentioned in search warrants but not the charging documents, led to the postponement of a detention hearing scheduled for Friday that would have been the first time Kouri Richins was in court since her case became the latest true crime sensation earlier this month. The hearing has been rescheduled for June 12. Prosecutors say Kouri Richins, 33, poisoned her husband, Eric Richins, 39, by slipping five times the lethal dose of fentanyl into a cocktail she made for him in March 2022. Twitter accuses Microsoft of misusing its data, foreshadowing a possible fight over AI

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A lawyer for Twitter owner Elon Musk accused Microsoft of misusing the service’s data and demanded an audit from the software giant. The letter primarily addresses a seemingly narrow set of alleged infractions by Microsoft in drawing information from Twitter’s database of tweets. But the move could foreshadow more serious developments. Musk has previously accused Microsoft and its partner OpenAI in a tweet of “illegally” using Twitter data to develop sophisticated AI systems such as ChatGPT. “ Lawsuit time,” Musk wrote in that April tweet. But the letter, signed by Musk lawyer Alex Spiro, tiptoed around that concern. It noted that Microsoft’s agreement with Twitter barred it from overuse of the service’s data such as exceeding “reasonable request volume” or “excessive or abusive usage.” Spiro then noted that “despite these limitations,” Microsoft had retrieved more than 26 billion tweets in 2022 alone. He provided no context for those numbers. T...
