Daniel Hagari said Saturday morning during a press briefing in Tel Aviv.“The forces are in the field and continue the fighting,” he added, without giving further details.Hagari’s words confirm the military operation has undergone a significant expansion after what it had earlier described as two “targeted raids,” which took place on Wednesday night and Thursday night. Both those raids saw ground forces withdraw after a few hours. However, it does not appear as though any major ground offensive aimed at seizing and holding signif...

Only those inside know what’s happening there. At the end of last week, I reached out to a source of mine from previous reporting, knowing that he’d been born and raised in Gaza, and I asked him how his family was managing in the face of the bombing campaign. He told me that so far, seven relatives on his father’s side, and 30 on his mother’s, had been killed. Those are numbers that we have no ability to comprehend. I told him that if he was able to, he was welcome to join our podcast, “Deconstructed” and tell their stories. After thinking about it for a few days, he decided to do it, and we spoke on Thursday evening, the night before he lost all contact with his family.  ...

Billing scores long-range wonder goal to earn Bournemouth first win in Premier League this season

BOURNEMOUTH, England (AP) — Philip Billing scored a wonder goal from around 40 yards (meters) on Saturday to earn Bournemouth a 2-1 win over Burnley and its first Premier League victory of the season. The Denmark midfielder collected the ball just inside Burnley’s half, took a couple of touches then — from a central position — lobbed back-pedaling goalkeeper James Trafford for a goal celebrated wildly inside the Vitality Stadium.Few will have enjoyed it more than Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, whose job was coming under pressure after arriving in the offseason and failing to win any of his first nine league games in charge. It looked like Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez might have denied Iraola the much-needed result when he shot into the corner in the 88th minute. After a VAR check that lasted more than five minutes — and drew cries of “this is embarrassing” by fans — the goal was scrubbed off.Charlie Taylor smashed home a bouncing ball home from the edge of the area to put Burnley...

Eddie Nketiah scores hat trick as Arsenal routs last-place Sheffield United 5-0 in Premier League

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:36:10 GMT

LONDON (AP) — Eddie Nketiah scored his first Premier League hat trick as Arsenal brushed aside last-place Sheffield United 5-0 on Saturday to keep pace in the title race. The England striker made sure Arsenal didn’t miss the injured Gabriel Jesus as he opened the scoring in the 28th minute from close range and completed his hat trick in the 58th with a fierce shot from outside the area to put Arsenal 3-0 up. Substitute Fabio Vieira netted the fourth from the penalty spot in the 88th and Takehiro Tomiyasu completed the rout deep into stoppage time from a corner. Jesus had been the architect of Arsenal’s win at Sevilla in the Champions League in midweek with a goal and an assist, but also sustained a hamstring injury that is expected to sideline the Brazilian for a few weeks. That gave Nketiah another chance to impress and he made full use of it against a team that has now conceded a league-high 29 goals in 10 games. In a tepid first half that saw Arsenal continually pass the ba...

VALLETTA, Malta (AP) — Talks on Ukraine’s plan for peace kicked off in Malta on Saturday, with the participation of more than 65 countries — but not Russia, Maltese and Ukrainian officials said. The two-day meeting of national security delegates is the third round of such talks in recent months. Ukraine sees them as an opportunity to win support for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s 10-point peace plan from countries across the globe, especially as the conflict in the Middle East risks shifting the focus away from Ukraine. Russia has dismissed the initiative as biased and refused to attend the meetings.“Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts are paying off, as international support for the Ukrainian peace formula is growing,” The head of the Ukrainian presidential office, Andriy Yermak, wrote on X — formerly known as Twitter — ahead of the opening session, stressing the strong international attendance. The initial round of talks in Copenhagen in June saw just 15 participants, rising to 43 f...
